Thanks for the tutorial! It was going well for me, until you made a mistake and then didn't explaine how to fix it (at least I didn't get it). The rest of the tutorial became pointless for me as a beginner :(

Cool, I wish I had tuts like this when I started. Good call. I like watching noob tuts too to solidify my knowledge. I have two problems with this tut tho, and they are both related. The first is the fact that you said Blender can't calculate transparent shadows. It can if you are using raytrace. The second, which is why the shadows are black, is because you never made the glass transparent. You only made it STRONGLY transparent from the viewing angle only. Thats what fresnel controls. The ALPHA slider is what controls how transparent the material is from any and all angles. When ALPHA is at 0, an object is completely clear except reflections. As long as ALPHA is BELOW 1, raytracing will calculate haw much light is passing through the material based on ALPHA, How much it bends by IOR, and How much light passes through at heavy angles by FRESNEL, i.e. (the profile of the glass where it is facing left and right)
But the shadow will STILL be black until you tell the ground plane to accept shadows from transparent materials. This is done by selecting the object that will receive the shadow, (the ground plane) going to its Material tab, scrolling down to the Shadows tab and the checking 'Receive Transparent' Now it should work without AO or Enviro Lighting! And you won't have that greyish looking profile from the fresnel if you turn that back down to 0. Fresnel is more fore materials that change the way they look at different angles, kinda like those billboards that change as you get closer on the highway. Just wanted to throw that out there so nobody thinks Blender is weak! lol Hope it helps out Greg. I hope you guys get popular, and I can tell you that the word is out... People WILL be checking this site out soon! Just a hint tho, you'll get jumped on for that transparency thing! lol Best of luck guys! Thanks for bringing us more help with Blending!

yeah, I just skimmed through this tutorial to see if he used any tools i haven't learned yet, and i noticed that he said that. I really wanted to scream RECEIVE TRANSPARENCY!!

Thanks John - when I said that blender can't make trasparent shadows, I meant that it cant make caustics (Blender noobs might not know that word ;) ) Thanks for all that info though, its always nice to learn something new about something you thought you knew :)

"I meant that it cant make caustics" Have you ever checked out the Yafaray render engine? It does caustics for blender, where the internal engine does not.

Here is a very quick render using Yafaray I think it does rather nicely though your options for materials is quite limited. http://www.flickr.com/photos/51143795@N04/5512479519/
